Big Weekend

I am driving down to Napoli to visit my father this weekend. I am leaving after work and may or may not stay the weekend.

You see, I am considering coming out to my father. I know how he will react, but if I do not get up the courage to tell him now, I may never tell him.

As a child, I hid plenty of things from my father. What child does not? But now that I am an adult, I feel as though I should act like a responsible adult and talk to my father about this.

I know that he will not approve. I suspect that he will disown me.

But I am leaving the country in about two weeks. I will be away from him then. Maybe I can start a new life in a new country.

I can at least hope that he will not get angry and violent. He might, he might not. I hope that he will act like as much of an adult as I will and that we can talk without raising our voices and that we can act without violence.

Perhaps I am overly optimistic, but I certainly do not expect him to accept me. He is too Catholic for that. I do not expect anything but disgust from him.

But I might as well get it over with.

This is a huge step out of the closet, but I am suprisingly not nervous about it. It is just something that has to be done.

I wish you the best of luck. I respect the fact that you are doing what may not be a pleasant thing for you to do but know that it has to be done to get things settled.

Alessandro, of course I, too, wish you luck! Try not to be too pessimistic. Your dad may react in a bad way at first; but you know he loves you. As Steve said, "only do what you feel comfortable with." If you get there, and for some reason feel that it might not be the right time then remember that you have two weeks before leaving. Do it at the right time. No matter what happens, stay on the high road. Try not to lose your temper. I'm nervous for you.

Now that you've already left for Napoli, I can say I feel anxious for you. I hope everything will turn out as «smooth» as possible. And, please, don't loose your temper.
My thoughts are with you this weekend, Alessandro!
As I know you're a Catholic, may God be with you at that moment.
